Blanche Tucker had a great idea for possibly recognizing all the progress you all have made and all the contributions to the school: special honor cords at Graduation for seniors who complete the program.
One thing Ms. Harrell noted, though, was that honor cords are not usually awarded just for completing a single class, but for a longer series of accomplishments, participation, and contributions.
What do you all think? Have the tasks and learning that the seniors accomplished so far in 180 merited honor cords for this year? If we should not look to award cords on the basis of one class, what would a leadership "arc" look like for you underclassmen? Should we set up some sort of a "leadership points" system where kids can earn points as they participate in the course and in projects? How would we weight different contributions and who would judge that a student actually earned those "points?"
One idea for next year is to tag onto Dr. and Mrs. Edwards' vision for an iLead21 program, where we have have identified, articulated levels of leadership. As you moved through the program, you would be "certified" to be at certain levels of leadership skills, not unlike a martial arts black belt type program or a military system of rank. We could then decide, for SRMHS, which level students should reach in order to have that accomplishment recognized at graduation.
Other ideas? Thoughts? Concerns? Let's hear 'em!
