What I've found in my time as a leader (wow, that makes me sound old) is that clubs that have objectives and a clear purpose are more likely to succeed than clubs that are disorganized. If we are to have a 180 club, it would need a clear cut purpose that tells exactly how the club would 'keep 180 members involved', so there is no confusion, and it is clear to all 180 graduates what they will be doing. Also, if the founding members were to establish clear-cut objectives that explain what the 180 club will be achieving, it will enable them to have 'somewhere' to start. Basically, what I'm saying is that the club needs a starting point, and needs to know what they want to do.

It's amazing to think that we are approaching the end of this ground-breaking journey! Let's start to brainstorm about what might be our "Next Steps" for you all who are about to become Alumni of the 180 Leadership Program.
In an ideal world, and possibly in the not-too-distant future, we'll have a 180 version 2.0 for you all to take as a class, but until we clear the administrative hurdles, here are a few of my thoughts. Please chime in with your own ideas & visions! -We form a 180 Club that can meet during smart lunch and/or after school. This group could be open to both class grads and people who just want to work on some of our projects. This group could continue the projects and initiatives we've started this year, continue to collaborate through the wiki with any new students/schools who join, and act as a resource for being student presenters at events like our Magnet Open House and leading assorted tours. -the 180 Grads pair up with the BullDog Mentors -The 180 Grads get assigned an AC who does not have a BullDog Mentor and work with that academic coach to plan assorted activities and lessons for the Wednesday sessions of AC -The 180 Grads get paired up with volunteer teachers in the school to meet with them on a regular basis to look at ways to "spice up" the instructional practices in that classroom, based on what we've learned about communication, perspective, learning styles, reflection, organization, etc. -The 180 Grads act as regular or occasional student teachers in new 180 classes, working with the facilitators to help teach the 180 program -The 180 Grads are each assigned to a different curriculum department or PLC in the school and attend meetings and participate in planning to help teachers incorporate some of the lessons from 180 into each subject area Other thoughts? Other ideas? Go!

Blanche Tucker had a great idea for possibly recognizing all the progress you all have made and all the contributions to the school: special honor cords at Graduation for seniors who complete the program.
One thing Ms. Harrell noted, though, was that honor cords are not usually awarded just for completing a single class, but for a longer series of accomplishments, participation, and contributions. What do you all think? Have the tasks and learning that the seniors accomplished so far in 180 merited honor cords for this year? If we should not look to award cords on the basis of one class, what would a leadership "arc" look like for you underclassmen? Should we set up some sort of a "leadership points" system where kids can earn points as they participate in the course and in projects? How would we weight different contributions and who would judge that a student actually earned those "points?" One idea for next year is to tag onto Dr. and Mrs. Edwards' vision for an iLead21 program, where we have have identified, articulated levels of leadership. As you moved through the program, you would be "certified" to be at certain levels of leadership skills, not unlike a martial arts black belt type program or a military system of rank. We could then decide, for SRMHS, which level students should reach in order to have that accomplishment recognized at graduation. Other ideas? Thoughts? Concerns? Let's hear 'em! |

Could the student planners incorporate some of this leadership lexicon into planners for next year? Could we do covey habits in layman's terms? What else do students need to have to help them be successful leaders? See the planner page as well. http://180degrees.wetpaint.com/page/Student+Planners

We have to talk more because we are sharing so many of the same experiences and no one else (including my favorite teachers) can understand it. I completely feel changed as a teacher because of the 180 program. I catch myself constantly in my art classes and AC. It's a state of mind- not just another teaching curriculum. I think we knew this a little when we went through the training in the fall. However, the experience of facilitating a 180 team is unlike none other. I agree about this not being new. My master's thesis in 2000 was the effects of technology on student center learning. A ha moment! I get that more now way more than I did 9 years ago!
And yes, portfolios. I heard my share of grumbling myself. I believe I will not have a shortage of volunteers ready to create our system of final portfolio presentations. I realize how new this is to students since most of them have never had to prepare a portfolio for a class. Every art class I teach has a portfolio aspect- this is nothing new for me. I really had to get my group to 'think outside the box' for artifacts since they considered the mid-term portfolio as something new rather than what we've been doing all along. I also had to sacrifice one day extra just to be in the lab preparing portfolios. I'm excited to hear what they really have learned the past 9 weeks since so much of our focus has been on the team rather than the individual.

Me and my partner Tierra believe that seniors should not have to come to school the day of 4th period exams. Instead they should present their portfolio a week before finals sometime between May 12th and may 14th. We have also created a sign up sheet for seniors to sign up for a day that fits their schedule best.

We've created an issue bin for feedback from faculty and students. Feel free to respond with your ideas. I've also started a thread on the 180 wiki. Because there's so much to share, I'm doing it in sections.
+ Tons of pluses from students and several from faculty * fun (repeated) * Great for dept meetings- all were present!!!! * Freedom, liked longer amount of time (repeated) * liked having all friends at same lunch (repeated) * liked having teachers available (repeated) * time, Lunch is longer (repeated) * relaxation * Went smoother than expected (repeated) * Get to do my homework in library and tutorial sessions (repeated) * Not crowded in lunchroom * Food is actually hot unlike the cold temp food in 3rd lunch * Club/ sport meetings * 180 kids did a great job teaching acs about it. * I had time to retake a test. * Bike cops barely checked ids. * Students are starting to come in for help for next year's classes! * Students use tutorials; so there's no need for late pm or early am assistance sessions :)

I talked to Dana in 4th period and I think we've hit a stalemate concerning who is leading what for Leadership Week. He has not made any changes because he's waiting on Eric's feedback since so Wednesday was his entire idea. I've made some changes to the proposal and need Eric and Dana to let me know if this is okay. I've also added some updates. If we are going to do leadership week next week, we have to make decisions quickly and get the word out. Please read the updates and let us know what you think.

Thank you both for this feedback. I have also talked about starting up the club again in the past and no one has ever gotten back to me. I have talked to both Rucca and Risi and they are both willing to be apart of this club as well as several other formal Honor Marshals. I am delighted to know that both Mrs. Brown and Ms. Woodard are both willing to advise this group. Last year, each potential honor marshal had to complete a basic application and get two teacher recommendations. If we can get this club started again, I will keep this tradition. There are possibly 7 former honor marshals and more willing participated that have been docents at past school events. I will talk to Mr. Granger about regenerating this club. Thanks for your feedback.

Good start. I'd like to see more of a focus on leadership skills. Right now the photo contest does that, but how does the inclusive/mix it up days highlight leadership? I agree that they show perspective and diversity, etc, and that connects to leadership, but I don't see those as central to our school's 1st week focused on our leadership theme. Do you plan to incorporate any of the ideas Brent Murphy proposed?
Before we approve this, there are still a few steps I'd like to see you consider: 1) None of this has yet been presented for discussion w/ the 1st period team, beyond an announcement that "we're having it." 2) What are the key ideas about leadership that we want to highlight for the whole school? 3) How will we celebrate leadership throughout this week? Right now this sounds like a Mosaic project more than a 180, Magnet-theme project. Here's a few ideas to toss around: -guest speakers each day at lunch who are leaders in our schools, businesses and communities? -highlight a student or even a teacher or two a day who exemplify leadership traits? -feature special projects and activities for AC this week that focus on leadership skills -involve current leadership groups at the school-- SGA, the fraternities, Interclub, sports team captains, etc -record short videos and PSA's to be broadcast this week. You can feature key leadership concepts the 180 program has already covered, like decision making, time management, avoiding procrastination, etc. -since this is the week before prom (still not my 1st choice, let me go on record, but I will support you) can we use leadership language during the pre-prom assemblies, etc. Think about this, Collaborate with each team, and revise the proposal, and I think we'll have something solid!

Love this! Before I approve this, I think you need to elaborate on the timeline and calendar. I sent a message to the staff this afternoon but you should also include other action steps as well. Are there any other 180 members who were former honor marshals? What was the process of applying for this in the past? Can anyone be part of your committee? How many former honor marshals are interested in regenerating this? Mr. Granger is the administrator for clubs. Maybe you should contact him. Does anyone else have other feedback?

The Executive Board of Student Government met with Ms. Wright in January and she approved the idea for a school-wide club fair. The fair would be in the spring (and the fall if Student Government or whoever is in charge approves) and will allow students to see all of the clubs that Southeast has to offer. Other schools do this as well as a way to get more students involved in activities and experience clubs that some did not know existed. This will also help students who may not be able to stay afterschool for numerous club introductory meetings.
The proposal is as follows: January 6, 2009 Southeast Raleigh has numerous clubs that many students do not even know exist. With meetings after school almost everyday in the beginning of the school year, most students do not even know where to begin or how to keep up. We propose setting up a Lunch Club Fair where each club/activity set up a table in the Great Hall and have students come by and talk about why they should join this club. Occasionally there are one or two clubs set up outside of the cafeteria on any given day, but attention is usually not shown towards them in great numbers. We believe that more students would participate in clubs if they knew more about what each club stood for, requirements and benefits displayed in a more positive way than just hearing about it over the intercom. Your Student Body Officers, Alexis Davis, President Arielle Chambers, Vice-President Ashley Adams, Secretary Kenton Rowland, Treasurer John Taylor, Sergeant-At-Arms This has been approved by Ms. Wright. Now we just need to set a date (possibly during Leadership Week (4/20-4) or it could be the same day as the 8th grade open house (4/30) since the clubs will already have to set up that night anyway and they could kill two birds with one stone).
