On Thursday, our 4th period team did a think/pair/share and tallied responses for the biggest things they procrastinate. One of the top two responses was confrontation/ conflict. Hoping there is empathy in 180 land, I decided to share what I've been procrastinating for weeks- our tee shirts!

I have avoided following up on tee shirts because it is the biggest conflict between the two teams and I’m also avoiding the paperwork conflict when getting it approved. I had made actions towards resolving it by initiating the poll to vote on colors and speaking to Wright 3 times in the last two weeks about it. However, I still had not turned in the forms and followed up on this because I’m avoiding confrontation. Not that I’m a timid soul afraid of conflict, I just have enough going on in my life I want to avoid drama at all costs. So I procrastinate. I let the ball drop.

Yesterday, I made a pack between my think/pair/share partner Xavier that I would turn the forms into Wright and I did this morning. Of course, she may call me back into her office ten times to rewrite but at least I made a step. I also created a poll at http://180degrees.wetpaint.com/page/SRMHS to gather feedback from both teams before proceeding. My action steps towards overcoming this procrastination are to get the tee shirt committee from both teams to collect sizes on Monday and encourage votes until March 4. On March 5, I will e-mail the tee shirt folks the logo and a tentative order for them to process when Wright signs the payment form and sends it to the county. I actually feel so much better now that it’s off my shoulders.

When I look back at times I was really procrastinating, one thing that stands out is that I often had taken on tasks that I didn't really want or that weren't really my passion. Procrastinating became a way of rebelling-- kind of a passive-aggressive, you-can't-make-me-do-this response.
I also find that sometimes I take responsibility for things I should be "outsourcing." If the house is dirty, I need to remember I'm not the only one who lives there, and those others who helped mess it up can also help clean it up if I (A) expect it of them and (B) ask it of them.
Ex-- Ms. Harrell-- you didn't have to be responsible for the t-shirts. I could have been talking with the principal or filling out purchase orders, and I was really expecting to be doing this, since I got the whole ball rolling in the 1st place! I was waiting for the design to be finalized so we knew what our price points were. Or better yet, we both could have left it in the hands of the students, and let them learn how to do all these final action steps.
I do the same thing all the time-- take on a lot of stress with high urgency but low -importance tasks where I don't take time to step backwards and ask, who needs to be doing this?
The people who do the work are the ones who do the learning and get the sense of accomplishment, so whether it's my children or my students or my co-workers, I've found a little bit of time spent thinking about delegating is better for everyone!
Unless, of course, I procrastinate on that part too, lol!
Because although that sentence is funny, it's true. Procrastination if often a symptom of stress-- of pain-avoidance for work that seems petty or difficult or overwhelming to us in some way. True leadership means recognizing and nurturing the talents of those around us, and if we take on too much work for ourselves, we cheat ourselves, our projects, and the people we are leading!

AC Leaders vs. Bulldog Mentors

1st period has a committee working on the following: planning and coordinating 180 Teams who would be available to go into ACs and lead icebreaker/team-builder/ warm-up games for the Wednesday AC meetings

How is this different from bulldog mentors? Is the 1st period team familiar with the bulldog program led by Ms. Stover through the ACs? We have two 4th period team members who are already bulldog mentors. Ashley or John, could you respond with more info about bulldog mentors and your feedback? Would the committee from the 1st period team be interested in meeting with the bulldog mentors on Wednesday since there's already overlap between the two?

I think it's great to brainstorm ways the 180 students could become AC leaders. Keep great ideas rolling! I just want to add other possibilities to toss around as well. Never hurts to think outside the box and consider multiple solutions.

I sat beside Ms. Stover at the faculty meeting and passed notes (hee, hee). She is the 'advisor' of bulldog mentors and discussed how she hopes to recruit existing 180 students to become bulldog mentors (that's all of you!). She also will ask her current underclassmen bulldog mentors to sign up for the 180 degrees course for 2009/2010. I think she sees Bulldog mentors/ 180 being very connected and looks forward to feedback and suggestions from 180. Ashley (taeyrake) is the student leader of the Bulldog mentors and I'm sure would welcome feedback as well. Since the program is new, it would be able to do so much more with 180's help. Maybe with more students as bulldog mentors or AC leaders, every AC could be affected. Applications for both would need to precede Spring Registration.

I do want to say that I feel upperclassmen leaders still need their AC if he or she is a good one. There are so many things that come along junior and senior year that a strong AC can make easier- resumes, college applications, grad projects, and a host of silly wonderful senior activities like Homecoming, superlatives, etc. I could easily see Ms. Brown's vision of student leaders leading underclassmen academic coaches all over the building but I still think they need that loving relationship with a supportive AC at least once a week. That's just my 2 cents- I love my AC! What do all of you think?

Interclub Agenda and RSVP for 1/21

Next Wednesday 1/21 is your first Interclub Leadership Council. I've posted a tentative agenda on the ILC wiki- check it out. at http://srmhs.wetpaint.com/page/ILC+Agenda+1%2F21%2F09. If you have all the leaders of the school in one place, what do you need to say to them? Mr. Rudd will probably take about 20-30 minutes to chat about Magnet Fair Open House. I had thought about getting cookies for the beginning and starting at 3:10 even though the signs can say 3:00pm. What needs to be said? BTW, who plans to be there as a leader from another organization and who can be there from just 180?
