We have to talk more because we are sharing so many of the same experiences and no one else (including my favorite teachers) can understand it. I completely feel changed as a teacher because of the 180 program. I catch myself constantly in my art classes and AC. It's a state of mind- not just another teaching curriculum. I think we knew this a little when we went through the training in the fall. However, the experience of facilitating a 180 team is unlike none other. I agree about this not being new. My master's thesis in 2000 was the effects of technology on student center learning. A ha moment! I get that more now way more than I did 9 years ago!
And yes, portfolios. I heard my share of grumbling myself. I believe I will not have a shortage of volunteers ready to create our system of final portfolio presentations. I realize how new this is to students since most of them have never had to prepare a portfolio for a class. Every art class I teach has a portfolio aspect- this is nothing new for me. I really had to get my group to 'think outside the box' for artifacts since they considered the mid-term portfolio as something new rather than what we've been doing all along. I also had to sacrifice one day extra just to be in the lab preparing portfolios. I'm excited to hear what they really have learned the past 9 weeks since so much of our focus has been on the team rather than the individual. |

I should have warned you about the parent letters. I gave them to students and told them to go somewhere private for about 10 minutes. They sat on locker bays, in corners of the art room, and stood in the hall. I didn't ask them to share them though I tried to incorporate it into our lesson on reflection. I had planned to videotape this but had to resort to the letter because I was sick on Open House night. More than one parent said they didn't think they could have done the videotape because they would have broken down crying. It was very emotional for students and parents and an opportunity they rarely get. Several students have said that they are putting their letters in their mid-term portfolios.

Feel free to talk here in a discussion thread or go ahead and post something on the page, just use a diff. color/font/etc to keep it from being too confusing about who's talking!
I love your comments, b/c it makes me know I'm not alone in some of the patterns I'm seeing! The support is fantastic :-) |
